Phrase / freɪz / (ফ্রেজ্‌) n [a group of words without a finite verb, especially one that forms part of a sentence ‘the green car’ and ‘on Friday morning’ are phrases.] (কয়েকটি শব্দের সমষ্টি <প্রায়শই এর মধ্যে সমাপিকা ক্রিয়া থাকে না> যা কোনো একটি বাক্যের অংশ): ‘Start slowly’ is the key phrases for the first time marathon runner.

Abide by Sth (phrasal verb) [to accept and act according to a law, an agreement, etc.] (কোনো কিছুর প্রতি বিশ্বস্ত থাকা; মেনে চলা): You will have to abide by the rules of the club.

Act on/upon Sth [to take action as a result of advice, information, etc.] (কিছুর উপর কাজ করা): Why did not you act on her suggestion?

Add to Sth [to increase Sth in size, number, amount, etc.] (বৃদ্ধি করা): The wet weather only added to our difficulties.

Abound in/with Sth [to have Sth in great numbers or quantities] (উপচে পড়া; প্রচুর পরিমাণে বিদ্যামান থাকা): The forest abounds in wild animals.

Agree with Sth [to think that something is morally acceptable] (একমত হওয়া; সঙ্গতি পূর্ণ হওয়া): I do not agree with hunting.

Believe in Sb [to trust someone because you think that they can do something well or that they are a good person] (আস্থা খুজে পাওয়া; বিশ্বাস করা): They need a leader they can believe in.

Bear on Sth [to be connected or related to; to influence] (প্রাসঙ্গিক হওয়া): I do not see how that information bears on this case.

Bear Sb/Sth out [to support the truth of something] (<কোনোকিছু>নিশ্চিত করা; সমর্থন করা): The other witness will bear me out.

Bear with Sb [to be patient and wait while someone does something] (ধর্য্য সহকারে কারো সঙ্গে আচরণ করা): Would you please bear with me a little longer?

Belong to Sb [to be owned by Sb] (অধিকার ভুক্ত হওয়া): The islands belong to Spain.

Blow off [to put out a flame, etc. by blowing] (ফুঁ দিয়ে নিভিয়ে দেওয়া): After dinner, she blew out the candles.

Blow up [to destroy something or kill someone with a bomb, or to be destroyed or killed by a bomb] (বিস্ফোরক ব্যবহার করে কোনোকিছু ধ্বংস করা বা উড়িয়ে দেওয়া): They threatened to blow up the plane if their demands were not met.

Bring Sth about [to cause something to happen] (ঘটানো): He brought about his company’s collapse by his reckless spending.

Break away (from Sb/Sth) [to escape suddenly from Sb who is holding you or keeping you prisoner] (হঠাৎ পালিয়ে যাওয়া): The prisoner broke away from his guards.

Break down [(of a machine or vehicle) to stop working because of a fault] (<যন্ত্রপাতি সম্পর্কে>খারপ বা অচল হয়ে পড়া): Our car broke down and we had to push it off the road.

Break into Sth [to enter a building by force; to open a car, etc. by force] (বলপূর্বক প্রবেশ করা): The robber broke into the house at midnight.

Break Sth off [to end a relationship] (সম্পর্কের অবসান ঘটানো): they have broken off their engagement.

Break out [(of war, fighting or other unpleasant events) to start suddenly] (হঠাৎ ঘটা; প্রাদুর্ভার হওয়া): Fighting has broken out all over the city. A fire broke out during the night.

Break through [to make a way through Sth using force] (বলপূর্বক পথ করে নেওয়া): Demonstrators broke through the police cordon.

Break up [to separate into smaller pieces] (বিভিন্ন অংশ ভাগ বা পৃথক হওয়া; ছত্রভঙ্গ করা): The ship broke up on the rocks.

Break with Sth [to end a connection with Sth] (বিবাদ করা): He broke with the party on the issue of Europe.

Burn Sth down [to destroy Sth, especially a building, by fire, or to be destroyed by fire] (<আগুনে>পুড়ে ছাই হওয়া/করা; পুড়িয়ে ফেলা/দেওয়া): The house burned down in 1895.  

Burn Sth out [to destroy Sth completely by fire so that only the outer frame remains] (ভষ্মীভূত হওয়া): The hotel was completely burnt out.

Burst into Sth [to start producing Sth suddenly and with great force] ((ক) হঠাৎ ঘটা; (খ) ফেটে পড়া; শুরু করা): The aircraft crashed and burst into frames. She burst into tears.

Call for Sb [to collect Sb in order to go somewhere] (কাউকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে কোথাও যাবার জন্য তার নিকট যাওয়া): I will call for you at eight.
  
Call for Sth [to need Sth] (চাওয়া/আবশ্যক হওয়া): The situation calls for prompt action.

Call Sb in [to ask someone to come to help in a difficult situation] (<কোনো সাহায্যের জন্য কাউকে>ডেকে পাঠানো): to call in a doctor/the police

Call Sth off [to cancel Sth; to decide that Sth will not happen] (প্রত্যাহার/বাতিল ঘোষণা করা): Tomorrow’s match has been called off because of the icy weather.

Call on/upon Sb [to formally invite or ask Sb to speak etc.] (কারো সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎ করা): I now call upon the chairman to address the meeting. 

Care for Sb 1. [to look after Sb who is sick, very old, very young, etc.] (যত্ন নেওয়া; দেখাশোনা করা): He moved back home to care for her elderly parents.

2. Care for Sb [to love someone and feel romantic towards them] (ভালোবাসা; পছন্দ করা): He cared for her more than she realized.

Carry Sth off [to win Sth] (জিতে নেওয়া): He carried off the most coveted prizes.

Carry on [to continue doing something] (চালিয়ে যাওয়া; অব্যহত রাখা): Let’s carry on this discussion at some other time.

Carry Sth out [to do Sth that you have said you will do or have been asked to do] (পালন/কার্যকর করা): to carry out a promise/a threat/a plan/an order

Cast about/around for Sth [to try hard to think of or find Sth, especially when this is difficult] (সন্ধান করা; কিছু খুজে পেতে চেষ্টা করা): She cast around desperately for a safe topic of conversation.

Catch up (with Sb) [to reach someone in front of you by going faster than them] (<পিছনে থেকেও এগিয়ে এসে>সহগামীর নাগাল ধরা): I ran after her and managed to catch up with her.

Come about [to happen, or start to happen] (ঘটা): Can you tell me how the accident came about?

Come across Sb/Sth [to meet or find Sb/Sth by chance] (হঠাৎ দেখতে পাওয়া/সাক্ষাৎ হওয়া): He came across some of his old love letters in his wife’s drawer.

Come after Sb [to chase or follow Sb] (কাউকে অনুসরণ করা):

Come away (from Sth) [to become separated from Sth] (বিচ্ছিন্ন হওয়া): The plaster had started to come away from the wall.

Come off [to happen as planned or to succeed] (সফল বা ফলপ্রসু হওয়া): There was some sort of property deal that didn’t come off.

Come out [to be produced or published] (প্রকাশিত হওয়া): When is her new novel coming out?

Come over [to come to a place, move from one place to another, or move towards someone] (দূরবর্তী কোনো স্থান থেকে আসা): Are your family coming over from Greece for the wedding.

Come round {US come around} [to become conscious again after an accident or operation] (সংজ্ঞা ফিরে পাওয়া): She has not come round from the anesthetic yet. 

Come up [(of plants) to appear above the soil] (<বীজ, চারা, ইত্যাদি>মাটি ভেদ করে উঠা): The daffodils are just beginning to come up.

Come up to Sth [to reach an acceptable level or standard] (কোনো কিছু পর্যন্ত পৌঁছা বা কোনো কিছুর সমান হওয়া): Her performance did not really come up to her usual high standard.

Count on Sb [to be confident that you can depend on someone] (নির্ভর করা): You can always count on Raju in any crisis.

Crack down [to try harder to prevent an illegal activity and deal more severely with those who are caught doing it] (কারো বিরুদ্ধে শৃঙ্খলা মূলক শাস্তির ব্যবস্থা করা): Police are cracking down on drug dealers.

Cut Sth away (from Sth) [to remove Sth from Sth by cutting] (কেটে ফেলে দেওয়া; কেটে অংশবিশেষ বাদ দেওয়া): The doctor cut away the infectious finger.

Cut back 1. [to reduce Sth] (কমানো বা হ্রাস করা): If we do not sell more we will have to cut back production.
2. Cut back [to make a bush, etc. smaller by cutting branches off] (<ঝোপঝাঁড় প্রসঙ্গে>ছেঁটে দেওয়া): to cut back a rose bush.

Cut Sth down [to make a tree or other plant fall to the ground by cutting it near the bottom] (কেটে নামানো): to cut down a tree

Cut Sth off [to stop providing Sth such as electricity, supplies, etc.] (বিচ্ছিন্ন করা/হওয়া): They were cut off for not paying their phone bill.

Dash Sth off [to write or draw Sth very quickly, putting a little effort into it] (চটপট লিখে/এঁকে ফেলা): He dashed the letter off in five minutes.

Deal in Sth [to buy and sell particular goods as a business] (<নির্দিষ্ট কোনো পন্যের>ব্যবসা বা কেনাবেচা করা): The company deals in computer software.

Deal with Sb [to talk to someone or meet someone especially as part of your job] (আচরণ/ব্যবহার করা; মোকাবেলা করা; পেরে ওঠা): She used to deal with difficult customers.

Draw back [to move away from Sb or Sth, usually because you are surprised or frightened] (<কোনো কিছু থেকে>পিছিয়ে আসা): We drew back from taking our neighbors to court.

Draw on [if a time or a season draws on, it passes] (নিকটবর্তী হওয়া; কাছাকাছি আসা): Night was drawing on. 

Draw on/upon Sth [to use a supply of Sth that is available to you] (নিজের সম্পদ, অভিজ্ঞাতা ইত্যাদের উপর নির্ভর করা): I will have to draw on my savings?

Dwell on/upon Sth [to keep thinking or talking about Sth especially Sth bad or unpleasant] (কোনোকিছু নিয়ে চিন্তাভাবণা করা বা বিশদভাবে আলোচনা করা): In his speech, he dwelt on the plight of the sick and the hungry.

Fall back [to move back suddenly from someone or Sth, often because you are frightened] (পিছু হটা): The enemy fell back as our troops advanced.

Fall for Sb [to suddenly have strong romantic feelings about someone] (কারও বা কিছুর মায়া বা আকর্ষণে মুগ্ধ হওয়া): He has fallen for her in a big way.

Fall in with Sb/Sth [to accept and support a plan or suggestion] (সম্মত হওয়া): He fell in with my idea at once.

Fall off [to decrease in quantity or quality] (কমে যাওয়া; কম হওয়া): Sales have been falling off recently.

Fall on/upon Sb [to attack or take hold of Sb/Sth with a lot of energy and enthusiasm] (আক্রমণ করা বা ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়া): The children fell on the food and ate it greedily.

Fall out (with Sb) [to argue with someone and stop being friendly with them] (কলহ বিবাদ করা): He left home after falling out with his parents.

Fall through [to fail to happen] (ব্যর্থ হওয়া): Our plans fell through because of lack of money. 

Fall to [to begin doing something energetically] (<জোরেসরে>কিছু করেতে শুরু করা): There was a lot of work to do, so they fell to immediately.

Fill Sth in [to complete a form, etc. by writing necessary information on it] (যতটুকু প্রয়োজন ততটুকু দিয়ে পূর্ণ করা): to fill in a form/questionnaire

Fill Sth up [to become completely full; to make Sth completely] (সম্পূর্ণ পূর্ণ করা বা হওয়া; শূন্যস্থান পূর্ণ করা বা হওয়া): The seats in the hall were filling up fast.

Find out [to get some information about Sth/Sb by asking, reading, etc.] (অধ্যয়ণ করে, হিসাব করে বা তদন্ত করে শেখা বা জানা): I have not found anything out about him yet.

Fish Sth/Sb out (of Sth) [to take or pull Sth/Sb out of a place] (তোলা; তুলে নেওয়া; ওঠানো): They fished a dead body out of the river.

Get away (from) [to leave or escape from a person or place, often when it is difficult to do this] (সটকে পড়া; পালিয়ে যাওয়া বা সড়ে পড়া): I will get away from work as soon as I can

Get away with Sth [to do something successfully although it is not the best way of doing it] (ঝুঁকি সত্ত্বেয় কোনোকিছু যথারীতি সাধান করা; অন্যায় করেও পার পাওয়া): He copied in the examination and managed to get away with it.

Get back (in) [to win an election after having lost the previous one] (পুনরায় ক্ষমতা লাভ করা): Mrs. Gandhi got back at the midterm election in 1980.

Get down [(of children) to leave the table after a meal] (<শিশু সম্বন্ধে> খাবার পর আসন ত্যাগ করা):

Get down to Sth [to begin to do Sth; to give serious attention to Sth] (মন দিয়ে কাজে নেমে যাওয়া): I have got a lot of work to do, but I can not seem to get down to it.

Get (Sb) into Sth [to (cause someone to) become involved in a difficult situation, often without intending to] (কোনো বিশেষ অবস্থায় পরা): After he lost his job, he got into debt.

Get off [to leave a place, usually in order to start a journey] (যাত্রা করা; রওনা দেওয়া): If we can get off by seven o’clock, the roads will be clearer.  

Get on [to be successful in your career, etc.] (এগিয়ে যাওয়া; উন্নতি করা): Parents are always anxious for their children to get on.

Get off (Sth) [to leave a train, bus or aircraft] (<বাস, ট্রেন, ইত্যাদি থেকে>নামা): I tripped as I got off the bus.

Get out [to become known] (জানাজানি হওয়া; প্রকাশিত হওয়া): If this gets out there will be trouble.

Get out (of Sth) [to leave or go out of a place] (বাহিরে যাওয়া): She screamed at me to get out.  

Get over Sth [to deal with or gain control of Sth] (জয় করা; দমন করা): He cannot get over her shyness.

Go against Sth/Sb [to oppose or disagree with something or someone] (বিরুদ্ধ হওয়া): He would not go against his parents’ wishes.

Go ahead [to begin to do Sth, especially when Sb has given permission or has expressed doubts or opposition] (অগ্রসর হওয়া বা শুরু করবার অনুমতি): ‘May I start now?’ ‘Yes, go ahead.

Go along [to make progress; to develop] (অগ্রসর হওয়া): Things are going along nicely.

Go away [to leave a place] (চলে যাওয়া): Go away and leave me alone! Just go away!

Go back on Sth [to fail to keep a promise; to change your mind about Sth] (<প্রতিশ্রুতি>পালনে ব্যর্থ হওয়া/ভঙ্গ করা; কথা না রাখা): He never goes back on his word.

Go down [to move down to a lower level or place] (<জাহাজ ইত্যাদে>ডুবে যাওয়া): Everyone took to the lifeboats when the ship started to go down.

Go in for Sth [to take an exam or enter a completion] (পরীক্ষা দেওয়া বা প্রতিযোগিতায় নামা): She’s going in for the Cambridge First Certificate.

Go off [to be fired; to explode] (বিস্ফোরিত হওয়া; <গুলি>নিক্ষিপ্ত হওয়া): The gun went off by accident. The bomb went off in a crowded street.

Go on 1. [to happen] (ঘটা; চলতে থাকা): What’s going on here?
2. Go on [used when encouraging or asking someone to do Sth] (<কাউকে>সাহস/উৎসাহ দেওয়া): Go on! Have another drink! Go on – jump!

Go out [to leave your house to go to a social event] (বাইরে বের হওয়া, বিভিন্ন সামাজিক অনুষ্ঠানে যাওয়া): She goes out a lot.

Go over Sth [to examine or look at Sth in a careful or detailed way] (খুঁটিনাটি পরীক্ষা করে দেখা): Go over your work before you hand it in.

Go through Sth [to look at or examine Sth carefully, especially in order to find Sth] (তল্লাশি করা; কোনোকিছু খুজে দেখা): I always start the day by going through my email.

Go towards Sth [to be used as part of the payment for Sth] (যোগান দেওয়া): The money will go towards a new car.

Go under [(of Sth floats) to sink below the surface] (ডুবে যাওয়া): The ship went under just minutes after the last passenger had been rescued.

Hail from (somewhere) [to come from or to have been born in a particular place] (কোথাও থেকে আসা): His father hailed from Italy. Where do you hail from?

Hand Sth down (to Sb) [to give or leave Sth to Sb who is younger than you] (ঐতিহ্য, উত্তরাধিকার ইত্যাদি রেখে যাওয়া বা হস্তান্তরিত করা): Most of his clothes were handed down to him by his older brother.

Hand over (to Sb) [to give Sb else your position of power or the responsibility for Sth] (<অন্যকে>দিয়ে দেওয়া বা ছেড়ে দেওয়া; হস্তান্তরিত করা): He finally handed over his responsibility for the company last year.

Hang on [used to ask Sb to wait for a short time or to stop what they are doing] (<একমিনিট>সবুর করো): Hang on a minute – I’ll be with you in a moment! Hang on – I’m not quite ready.

Hong Sth out [to attach things that you have washed to a piece of thin rope or wire, etc. outside so that they can dry; to attach Sth such as a flag outside a window or in the street] (<ভেজাকাপড় চোপড়>শুকাতে দেওয়া; <ব্যনার ইত্যাদি>টাঙানো): Have you hung the washing out? They hung out banners that said ‘Stop the war!’

Hold on [used to tell Sb to wait or stop] (থামা): Hold on! This is not the right road.

Hold out [to continue to defend yourself against an enemy or attack without being defeated] (প্রতিরোধ অব্যাহত রাখা; টেকা): The rebels held out in the mountains for several years. 

Hold Sth/Sb up [to delay or block the movement or progress of Sb/Sth] (আটকানো; বিলম্বিত করা): Traffic was held up for several hours by the accident.

Keep away (from Sb/Sth [to avoid going near Sb/Sth] (দূরে থাকা): Keep away from the edge of the cliff.

Keep Sth down [to make Sth stay at a low level; to avoid increasing Sth] (সংযত রাখা; কোনোকিছু সংবরণ করা): We need to work hard to keep our prices down. Keep your voice down – I do not want anyone else to hear. 

Keep up (with Sb/Sth) [to move, make progress or increase at the same rate as Sb/Sth] (গতি বা উন্নতির স্তর বজায় রাখা): Wages are not keeping up with inflation.

Knock Sb down/over [to hit Sb and make them fall to the ground] (কাউকে ভূপাতিত করা): He was knocked down by a bus. He knocked his opponent down three times in the first round.

Knock Sth down [to destroy a building or part of a building] (ভেঙে ফেলা; ধূলিসাৎ করা): There old houses are going to be knocked down.

Lay Sth aside [to keep Sth, usually money, for use in the future] (সঞ্চয় করা; পৃথক করে রাখা; সরিয়ে রাখা): She’s trying to lay Sth aside (=save some money) for her retirement.

Lay Sth down [to put Sth down or stop using it] (আত্য সমর্পণ করা): Both sides were urged to lay down their arms (=stop fighting).

Lay Sth out [to plan how Sth look and arrange it in this way] (পরিকল্পনা করা; বিন্যাস করা; সাজানো): The gardens were laid out with lawns and flowers beds.

Lay Sb up [if Sb is laid up, they are unable to work, etc. because of an illness or injury] (বিছানায় পড়ে থাকতে বাধ্য হওয়া; শয্যাশায়ী হওয়া): She’s laid up with a broken leg.

Live on [to continue to live or exist] (<কোনোকিছুর মাঝে>বেঁচে থাকা): She died ten years ago but her memory lives on.

Live in [to live at the place where you work or study] (<কর্মস্থলের ভিতরে>বসবাস করা): They have an au pair living in.  
Ø Au pair / ˌoʊ ˈper / (ˌ ˈপের্‌) n [a young person, usually a woman, who lives with a family in a foreign country in order to learn the language and who looks after the children or cleans the house in return for meals, a room and a small payment] (বহিরাগত যে সব তরুণী গৃহস্থালির টুকিটাকি দায়িত্ব পালনের বিনিময়ে আহার, বাসস্থান এবং লেখা পড়ার সু্যোগ পায়, প্রত্যাবাসিকা): She worked in Paris for six months as an au pair.

Look after Sb/Sth [to be responsible for or to take care of Sb/Sth] (যত্ন নেওয়া; দেখাশোনা করা; খেয়াল রাখা): We look after the neighbors’ cat while they are away.

Look at Sth [to examine Sth closely] (ভালভাবে পরীক্ষা করা): Your ankle’s swollen – I think the doctor ought to look at it.
